The Gonzales 'COME AND TAKE IT' Flag was flown by Texans at the Battle of Gonzales, the first military engagement of the Texas Revolution. 

In 1835 a contingent of Mexican soldiers were sent to retrieve, by force, a cannon that had been loaned to the citizens of Gonzales in 1831 to protect the town from frequent Comanche raids. The relationship between the Mexican government and the people of Gonzales had deteriorated, and that government feared that residents of the town might use the cannon against them.  Instead of waiting for Mexican troops to reach Gonzales, the Texans went on the offensive. Two women of Gonzales, Cynthia Burns and Evaline DeWitt, created a painted Flag on cotton cloth depicting the cannon, the lone star of Texas and a clear challenge to the enemy. The Texans, flying the Flag, crossed the river and attacked at dawn. The Mexicans withdrew immediately.
