The Star-Spangled Banner, also known as the Great Garrison Flag, is a unique and historic American Flag. It features 15 stars and 15 stripes, making it the only official U.S. Flag with more than 13 stripes. This design represented the original 13 colonies plus Vermont and Kentucky, which had recently joined the Union.

During the War of 1812 this Flag famously flew over Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore. On September 13, 1814, the fort magnificently withstood a massive 25-hour British bombardment. The sight of the flag still flying in victory on the morning of September 14 inspired Francis Scott Key, an American lawyer watching as he was being held on a  British ship, to write the poem "Defence of Fort McHenry." Words from that poem would be put to music and eventually become our national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner".

The Flag remains a powerful symbol of American resilience and patriotism.
